Baynham-smith

In the 1990s, broadcast producer Sarah Smith and comedy writer Peter Baynham developed a professional relationship working together at BBC in radio and television. Smith, who had worked in regional theatre, commissioned for broadcast some comedy acts from Edinburgh Festival Fringe, a performing arts festival. Baynham was secondarily associated with individuals of a number of these acts. They first worked on the BBC radio comedy series The Harpoon in 1992, and then the television topical comedy Armistice from 1995 to 1998.

Smith and Baynham began a minor venture in animation by writing a few episodes of adult comedy series Bob and Margaret in 1998 and 2000, but then a major venture with dark adult BBC comedy series I Am Not an Animal in 2004 created by Baynham himself. It was this project that oriented the two around the financial and business aspects of animation as a medium. Smith joined Aardman Animations in 2006, redeveloping their slate. Around this time, Baynham separately began writing a screenplay for a feature length animated Christmas film. Smith brought this project into Aardman, serving as director for the 2011 film Arthur Christmas.

Up to this point, Smith had worked almost entirely within the British media scene. Her work on Arthur Christmas however involved outsourcing animation to the US studio Sony Picture Animation, where she developed a sceptical perspective of the heavily corporate environment of American media. She spoke of a desire to continue keeping an "maverick" and independent work life in Britain as covered here so far in BBC and Aardman Animations.

Development[]

On October 12, 2017, it was announced that the first film from Locksmith Animation would be Ron's Gone Wrong. Alessandro Carloni and Jean-Phillipe Vine would serve as the film's co-directors, while Peter Baynham and Locksmith co-founder Sarah Smith would write the screenplay. DNEG was on board as a digital production partner. Baynham and Elisabeth Murdoch were named executive producers on the same day.

Animation and voice acting have been done remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Henry Jackman composed the film's score.

On August 19, 2021, it was announced that Liam Payne had made an original song, titled "Sunshine" for the film. The song was officially released on August 27, 2021.[1]
